Hello all!
Tomorrow is our MAP testing day. Please make sure your child goes to bed early this evening. All of your children have been given their recommended MAP goal.
We will also be having class pictures on April 24, 2018. All of our students need towear their TMSA uniform. No dress down passes will be allowed that day.
In math we will be continuing to work on Geometry and the different types of angles. We will also be measuring angles. If your child does not have a protractor, please purchase one at the dollar store over the weekend.
Next week in science, we will be covering Energy Conservation and Transfer. The students will know basic forms of energy. They will also know that electricity flowing through an electrical circuit produces magnetic effects in the wires. The students will also know that light travels in a straight line and that light can be refracted, reflected, and/or absorbed.

Hello Parents!
Sorry for the delay in posting as I have been sick!
ALL FIELD TRIP FORMS ARE DUE TOMORROW!
We are having a field trip on Friday. Even though it is a dress down day your children must wear their red polos, jeans, sneakers, and a jacket as we will be eating lunch outside. The red polo shirts are for safety reasons so that your child can be easily spotted. Also, lunches need to be packed in a throw away bag with all disposable items inside (no containers or silverware) and with their name written on the outside.
We will be participating in the Noetic Math Contest tomorrow. The tests will be scored and sent to Mr. Karamisir who will be submitting them.
In math we are working on solving multi-step word problems with the orders of operation. I want to stress the importance of your children knowing their multiplication facts and division facts as they need this to solve the problems in class.
In science we are continuing to study Earth Materials. We had an in-house field trip yesterday from Mad Science reviewing how rocks are formed. The kids will be investigating mock-rocks this week.

Hello Parents!
I want to congratulate our wonderful class for winning the Book Coin Challenge for the Scholastic Boof Fair. As a result, we will have our dress down day tomorrow as a reward. We will also be having ice cream!!
In math, we are continuing to work on multiplying three-digit numbers by a one digit number. It is imperative that you practice multiplication facts with your child each night. It is extremely difficult to teach multi-digit if they still do not have their basic multiplication facts done. Also please be aware that I am remediating lessons as I see necessary in the classroom.
In science we started a new unit on Earth Materials. These are the standards that we will be working on for the next month:
4.P.2 Understand the composition and properties of matter before and after they undergo a change or interaction.
4.P.2.1 Compare the physical properties of samples of matter (strength, hardness, flexibility, ability to conduct heat, ability to conduct electricity, ability to be attracted by magnets, reactions to water and fire). Note: This standard is integrated within the Earth Materials unit because students conduct various tests to observe the physical properties of samples of matter (i.e., rocks and minerals).
4.P.2.2 Explain how minerals are identified using tests for the physical properties of hardness, color, luster, cleavage, and streak.
4.P.2.3Classify rocks as metamorphic, sedimentary, or igneous based on their composition, how they are formed and the processes that create them.
I will be out at a conference all of next week. I will be checking my email but might not be able to respond right away. If your child is sick please notify Mrs. Bell at [email protected].

Happy October!
Science Fair topics were due yesterday. Six students still have not picked their topics. Parents please keep the outline on the second page of the packet, on your refrigerator or somewhere that you can check it daily so that your child doesn't miss one of the deadlines. These deadlines are entered into my gradebook for a homework assignment. If you have any questions regarding the Science Fair please email me as soon as possible to clear up any confusion. This is a mandatory school project and not optional.
Parents also please make sure that on the nights that homework is assigned, that your child completes it and returns it the next day. The only time I will accept late homework is if your child is out sick. This was in my syllabus that you all received during Meet the Teacher.
In math we started Unit 2 which will cover the following Common Core Standards:
4.OA.A.1-Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison, example: 35=5x7 as a statement that 35 is 5 times as many as 7and 7 times as many as 5. Represent verbal statements of multiplicative comparisons as multiplication equations.
4.OA.A.2-Multiply or divide to solve world problems involving multiplicative comparison, example: by using drawins and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem, distinguishing multiplicative comparison from additive comparison.
4.OA.A.3-Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.
4.NBT.B.5-Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
In science we are continuing on our unit in nutrition. Today the students worked on a lab with a high school class to test foods for protein, glucose, lipids and carbohydrates. I will post pictures under the video tab. We have one of our parents that is a Dietician coming in on Friday to speak to the class regarding a proper diet.

Thank you to all of the parents that chaperoned our field trip to Old Salem. The kids had a great time! I will be posting pictures to the video page under the "more" tab above.
This week we will continue to work on place value, standard form, written form, expanded form, and adding & subtracting whole numbers. We are also working on a math PBL where the students are creating their own business plan to start their own donut shop, work within a budget, create a product/menu in order to have a successful, thriving business. This is a great way for your children to learn their math standards while incorporating real world scenarios.
In science we finished our unit on Moon Phases. I have some cute videos where your children created rap songs to remember the phases of the moon and incorporate some technology into their learning that I will also be posting soon.
We will be having Parent/Teacher conferences on Friday, September 22, 2017. Please sign up using the following link: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0f48a4ac28a0fd0-mssmileys .

Today in class we worked on place value, standard form, expanded form, and word form to hundred thousands. If you can review these at home with your child that would be extremely beneficial.
We are also talking about the moon phases in science. Words to focus on: waxing moon, waning moon, gibbous, crescent, full moon, new moon.
Parents please remember that paperwork was due last week. I am still missing a lot of the forms. Please fill the forms out for my class as well as the school forms.
The office has given us a link just in case your child is absent from school. You must click on the link and submit for Mrs. Bell.

Parents please remember that paperwork was due last week. I am still missing a lot of the forms. Please fill the forms out for my class as well as the school forms.
The office has given us a link just in case your child is absent from school. You must click on the link and submit for Mrs. Bell.

August 27th-
Hello fabulous 4th graders!! We had a wonderful first week and I'm looking forward to another one.
Parents please remember to fill out the online Parent Survey. It was supposed to be completed last week and I am still missing quite a few. This is very important as it will give me the emergency contact and medical information for your children. This was linked to the QR Code on the little sheet of paper from Open House. If you have misplaced it please let me know and I will send out another one. The QR Scanner is free to download in the App Store.
On Tuesday, August 29th, we will be having a Math Adaptive Test. This is in place of the Map Testing that we did last year. If you have any questions, please email me.
